About Sandhill

A supportive place for real change

Sandhill Counseling & Consultation was established in June 2009.

Sandhill is a specialized, professional mental health practice with highly trained therapists. We provide professional and compassionate counseling and consulting services through all of life's seasons, often offering a niche or specific expertise. Our therapists are diverse in their training backgrounds as well as their areas of specialization. We offer a safe, authentic experience for personal development, healing, and investment in Self.

The therapists and staff are remarkable at their craft, ethics, and genuineness. They bring their whole selves to the work and invite you to do the same.

Our mission is to provide professional and compassionate mental healthcare, ensuring that every individual, couple, or family we work with feels heard, valued, and supported. We're here to guide you towards growth, healing, and happiness.

Inspired by the sandhill crane

Sandhill cranes standing together in an open field

The crane is a soaring bird, and like that of the human spirit, it knows no limits. They fly with their neck and head outstretched as if they were seeing into the future. Their legs extend out behind them holding them to the past. When the past and the future meet, wisdom awakens.

This beautiful bird helps us release our fears as we move into uncharted territory. It helps us discover our personal grace and agility. It teaches us to express ourselves with integrity and conviction and most importantly it restores our faith in ourselves and in our spirit.

Our approach

Sandhill Counseling and Consultation specializes in the treatment of mental, emotional, psychological, and relationship problems using the latest theory and research-based approaches. We use empirically supported treatments, which means that the work we do is informed by science and has been shown to be effective in research studies. At Sandhill we work collaboratively with our clients in discussing the direction of treatment as well as conducting on-going assessment to measure effectiveness and progress.

  • Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, shown to be an effective treatment for a variety of concerns including depression, anxiety, OCD, panic, addiction and eating disorders.
  • Solution-Focused Therapy, commonly practiced to achieve reasonably quick results, and Narrative Therapy, which focuses on how we view the world and our place within it.
  • Strength-Based Theory, utilized by all of our therapists, focusing on internal strengths and resourcefulness to build resilience.
  • Play Therapy (directive and non-directive) and sand tray work with children.
  • Systems Theory, the root of relational work with individuals, couples, and families.
  • Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and the Gottman Model for couples, and EMDR for trauma.

Most commonly, people come to therapy once a week for a 50-minute session, although this can vary depending on the problem and its severity. Therapy lasts as long as it needs to; this can be anywhere from a few sessions to working with a therapist for several years.

Our values

"What is kind and loving for you is kind and loving for all humans." We know this starts with caring, concern, and understanding about ourselves to have care, concern, and understanding of others.

As a business Sandhill stands against racism. We stand against hate. We stand against discrimination. We stand against inequality and injustices for all of humanity. We are an affirming practice for the LGBTQI community.

Our partnership

In March of 2023 Sandhill proudly partnered with Nystrom & Associates. Nystrom & Associates and Sandhill now work together to buoy our shared values and vision.
