August is National Wellness Month - a time to reflect on how we care for ourselves in both big and small ways. While self-care often gets marketed as spa days and long vacations, true wellness lives in the everyday moments.
You don’t need a complete lifestyle overhaul to feel better. Small, consistent habits can have a powerful impact on your mental and emotional health. Here are 7 simple practices you can build into your day starting now.
1. Begin Your Day Without Your Phone
Instead of diving into emails, news, or social media the moment you wake up, give yourself a screen-free first 10–15 minutes. Take that time to stretch, sip water, or simply breathe. Starting your day with intention can help you feel more grounded and less reactive.
2. Get Outside (Even for 5 Minutes)
Sunlight and fresh air can significantly improve mood and focus. Step outside for a quick walk, sit on your porch, or just stand in the sunlight during a break. Nature - even in small doses - can be incredibly calming for your nervous system.
3. Drink Water Before Caffeine
This one simple shift can help reduce sluggishness, improve digestion, and support clearer thinking. Try drinking a full glass of water before your first cup of coffee or tea. It helps wake up your body without sending it straight into stress mode.
4. Move Your Body (Gently Also Counts)
You don’t have to commit to a full workout. Stretching, dancing to one song, or walking around the block all count. Movement releases feel-good chemicals and helps release built-up tension from stress or anxiety.
5. Name What You’re Feeling
Many of us go through the day carrying invisible emotional weight. Pause once or twice during the day to ask yourself, “What am I feeling right now?” Naming your emotions (even quietly to yourself) helps your brain process them and keeps them from building up beneath the surface.
6. Practice a 30-Second Breathing Break
Find a moment in your day to pause and take five slow, deep breaths. Inhale through your nose, exhale through your mouth. This simple act helps reset your nervous system and brings your focus back to the present.
7. End the Day With a Simple Check-In
Before bed, take 2–3 minutes to reflect: What went well today? What do I need to let go of? You can write it down or just think it through. This small habit can help release mental clutter and improve sleep.
Wellness isn’t about doing everything right, it’s about noticing what helps you feel more like yourself. This month, we invite you to start small. Pick one or two habits that resonate with you and build from there. And remember, if you need support along the way, you're never alone. We’re here to help you care for your mental health in sustainable, compassionate ways.
